Google is bringing AI features to Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet Chat and Slides

Credit: CNBC Google announced on Tuesday that its AI features will be added to a suite of its products including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet Chat and Slides. The features to expect include new ways to generate, summarize, and brainstorm text with AI in Google Docs, generate full emails in Gmail based on a user’s brief bullet points, and the ability to produce AI imagery, audio, and video for presentations in Slides. Google’s intentions with today’s announcement are really clear, and geared towards catching up to Microsoft and other competitors in the market. How far it can go is anyone’s guess; but it is apparent that the company is clearly in a haste to achieve its goals of catching up to its rivals. That said, only two of the products mentioned earlier are going to have the AI writing tools integrated into them, and also made available to a group of US-based “trusted testers” this month—Docs and Gmail. However, the features will be made available to other users all over the world towards the end of the year. Below is a complete list of AI-powered features that Google announced will be available Workplace apps in the future: Draft, reply, summarize, and prioritize your Gmail Brainstorm, proofread, write, and rewrite in Docs Bring your creative vision to life with auto-generated images, audio, and video in Slides Go from raw data to insights and analysis via auto-completion, formula generation, and contextual categorization in Sheets Generate new backgrounds and capture notes in Meet Enable workflows for getting things done in Chat Google gave a brief description of how the AI features will work in Gmail and Docs in a blog post: “In Gmail and Google Docs, you can simply type in a topic you’d like to write about, and a draft will be instantly generated for you. So if you’re a manager onboarding a new employee, Workspace saves you the time and effort involved in writing that first welcome email. From there, you can elaborate upon or abbreviate the message or adjust the tone to be more playful or professional — all in just a few clicks. Google One plans now have free VPN and dark web report

Google One plans already have extended storage for baking up files, photos and videos. Now, Google has decided to inclue an extra layer of security. It has included VPN by Google One to all plans and has introduced a dark web report in the U.S. to monitor personal information. VPN by Google One adds protection to your internet activity. It doesn’t account what apps or browsers you use. It will shield you from malicious parties like hackers or network operators by masking your IP address. Without a VPN, the apps and sites you visit could track your acticity and determine your location using your IP address. Google has taken several steps to ensure no one can tie your network traffic to your identity. The rollout has started and will continue for the next few weeks. VPN by Google One includes the Basic plan that starts at $1.99/mo. The VPN will be available in 22 countries across Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices. You can share the VPN with up to five other devices if they’re on your Google One plan. Dark web report monitors for stolen information Online identity fraud is an increasing problem that affects millions of people every year. It is due to information stolen through data breaches. A lot of this stolen info can be on the dark web, a hard-to-reach part of the internet that requires a specialized browser to access and isn’t indexed by search engines. So how do you know if your info was on the dark web where it might be at risk? The Google One dark web report scans the dark web for your personal info and will notify you if it finds a hit. The information searched for includes your name, address, email, phone number and Social Security number. Enabling dark web report will give you an option to select the information you’d like to keep an eye on. If any matching info is on the dark web, Google will notify you and provide guidance on how you might protect that information. For instance, if your Social Security number was on the dark web, Google may suggest you report it as stolen to the government or take steps to protect your credit.
