Microblogging outfit, Twitter has finally launched its official plugin for WordPress according to a couple of sources, which include TechCrunch.

The new plugin, which was announced by Twitter, is available on WordPress.org and GitHub. It will bundle together a few features largely offered by third-party plugins. It will also include the ability to embed tweets, the ability to embed videos uploaded to the microblogging site, as well as tweet and follow button.

It sure took a while before Twitter decided to release WordPress plugin, despite having hundreds of them available online. What this means is that the company now has its official plugin, which will make Twitter and WordPress play friendly.

Twitter

According to Greg Kumparak of TechCrunch, the official Twitter plugin for WordPress will be able to do a lot of things out of the box including the following:

  • Allows you to add a one-click sharing button so visitors can tweet out your stuff
  • Allows you to easily embed tweets, and customize the color scheme of embedded tweets to match your site’s look. You can change the link color, border color, and pick from a “light” or “dark” look
  • Automatically builds Twitter Cards when you share stuff to Twitter
  • Helps you to add a follow button to your layout
  • Tracks ad conversions if you’re running a Twitter Ad campaign for your WordPress blog

The problem a lot of users might have is that new official Twitter plugin for WordPress might not be able to do much when compared with some third-party plugins available. So you might want to stick with those ones if you feel like.

The new Twitter plugin won’t be able to embed your Twitter feed or let’s say your last couple of tweets in your WordPress layout. No mention was made of feed embedding, which is very popular in most third-party plugins for WordPress out there. However, it should work on individual tweets.

The official Twitter plugin for WordPress, which can be found here, does have some basic features you will find very interesting. The beauty of this is that you won’t have to start looking for a Twitter plugin from a host of available third-party plugins; a task that might be too cumbersome sometimes.

To make rebuilding your webpages and admin features very easy and quick, the official plugin has been integrated with WordPress APIs. The plugin has already recorded 158,000 downloads in the first few hours of release according to WordPress.
