After years of leaks and rumors, Apple Watch, the company’s first wearable, was revealed alongside the two new smartphones, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Even though during the event, Mr. Tim Cook went through all of the smartwatch’s features, some details are still unknown.

A report from the research firm “NPD DisplaySearch” states that the Apple Watch is equipped with a sapphire protected display which costs $27 to produce, this amount including the parts and labor costs. Both 1.3″ and 1.5″ variants have the same 240×320 resolution, resulting a density of 299 ppi for the smaller model, respectively 261 ppi for the larger Watch.

Basically, the smartwatch is made from two important parts: a display module, evaluated a $7,86, and the sapphire protected touch panel, which costs $19.55, according to GSMArena.

For anybody who was looking forward to buying an Apple Watch, this might come as a shock, as the price for the wearable will start from $349, in early 2015. On the other side, it’s the first time anyone has used a combination of a flexible AMOLED display with sapphire glass covering it, so, from a certain point of view, a part of they price is for the innovation itself.

It is well known that most of Apple’s mobile devices cost less more than their retail price, so the real cost of an Apple Watch might not come as a big surprise for everybody, but it’s still interesting to see how much a good marketing strategy increases the value of a product.
