SnapChat Discovery will provide news articles and mobile ads

Snapchat is known for its ephemeral text messaging, but the company, like so many others, desires to grow financially – and mobile ads are on the rise.

Interestingly enough, it seems that Snapchat’s ambitions stretch beyond text messaging to creating, eventually, an entire social network. The latest step towards Snapchat’s social network site is to create an atmosphere of mobile ads through news content as well as TV and movie clips.

Snapchat has already been in talks with news providers online, such as The Daily Mail and others, to provide ephemeral news articles that can be read – and that, like its text messages, will quickly vanish thereafter. Snapchat also intends to provide ephemeral TV and movie clips that will also disappear quickly after you watch them.

This would mark the first time that Snapchat intends to receive pay in order to promote companies, despite the fact that GrubHub, a diner marketing company, for example, already uses the app in order to reach new users. At the same time, however, setting up mobile ads would allow Snapchat to become more like Facebook in its offering. At the moment, Snapchat is known for text messaging, but to create news content, TV ads, and movie clips would put Snapchat on its path to eventually becoming a social media network of its own with even games being shared that can be played in as little as 5 minutes. Snapchat just launched Snapchat Stories last year, and Snapchat Stories text messages don’t disappear in just 10 seconds (as do all other Snapchat messages).

According to the company’s own stats, over half of its users are between the ages of 13 and 17, and these teenagers send more than 500 million quickly-disappearing messages on a daily basis. Snapchat has been around for three years in the mobile space now, but has posed a threat to social network company Facebook and its mobile ad dominance. Facebook recently created Facebook Slingshot to rival Snapchat, attempting to get Facebook users to send messages (both sender and recipient) in order to receive the communication from the other individual. Facebook has gone on record as saying that Facebook Slingshot is an ephemeral text messaging service (separate from Facebook Messenger) that gets users to interact a lot in real time.
