Recently, Pinterest introduced three new visual discovery tools, including Lens. Lens is a feature that lets you snap a photo or use an existing image on your camera roll to find pins and themes related to the photo on your phone. The feature, which is a strong statement of intent on the part of Pinterest, is now available to users in the US.

Lens doesn’t require a special skill to get used to; but first, you must update your app to the latest version, then tap the search bar, followed by the red camera icon. Point Lens to any object of interest via the Pinterest app on your phone, and the tool [Lens] will help you find something similar shared by other users on Pinterest. Objects that can be pointed at using Lens could include shoes, bags, accessories, and many more. It is interesting to add that you will also be provided with information on brands that sell items of your interest that have been pointed at when using the tool.

Pinterest’s Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Evan Sharp said:

Just point Lens at a pair of shoes, then tap to see related styles or even ideas for what else to wear them with. Or try it on a table to find similar designs, and even other furniture from the same era. You can also use Lens with food. Just point it at broccoli or a pomegranate to see what recipes come up. Patterns and colors can also lead you in fun, interesting or even just plain weird new directions.”

The good thing about Lens is that, it works in two ways; you can use the tool to find a product of your choice, and people too can use it to find your product [if you own a business or a brand].

Lens is still learning, which of course, is not strange considering how machine learning works. A few things are still being put in place by Pinterest—so, it means the feature still has a long way to go before it becomes what everyone wants it to be. A few mix up here and there because the process of learning is one that takes time and could even be forever. However, the more you get to use the tool, the faster it learns and discovers what your interests are.

Pinterest Product Manager for Search, Eric Sung said:

“Lens is still in beta, which means it isn’t perfect just yet. It is pretty good with recipe ingredients and outfit ideas. And if you Lens a throw pillow, chair or piece of art over at your friend’s house, you should turn up some great ideas.

“But Lens is still learning, and doesn’t always recognize exactly what you’re looking for.

“Lens will stay in beta as it gets even better at recognizing all the things. And that’s where you come in!”

If you live in the US, and have tried the new Pinterest Lens; why not tells us your first impression about the tool? You can share your views with us by using the comment box below.
