Pinterest continues to demonstrate to everyone that it is set to make its platform conform with the latest technology. By adding a new tool called Lens, the company has positioned itself as a force to be reckoned with in terms of machine learning. On Tuesday, the company launched Lens, a new tool that uses machine vision to identify specific elements in pictures.
“At Pinterest, we’ve developed new experimental technology that, for the first time ever, is capable of seeing the world the way you do. Now there’s a way to discover ideas without having to find the right words to describe them first.
“It’s called Lens (currently in beta), and it lets you use the camera in your Pinterest app to discover ideas inspired by objects you see out in the real world,” the company said in a blog post.
Lens, according to Pinterest, will detect objects in the real world and suggest related items on the service. Still in the beta stage, Lens has been integrated into the Pinterest mobile app, and will return answers similar to whatever it is pointed at.
Explaining how Lens works or how any Pinterest user can use the new feature, Pinterest’s Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Evan Sharp said:
“Just point Lens at a pair of shoes, then tap to see related styles or even ideas for what else to wear them with. Or try it on a table to find similar designs, and even other furniture from the same era. You can also use Lens with food. Just point it at broccoli or a pomegranate to see what recipes come up. Patterns and colors can also lead you in fun, interesting or even just plain weird new directions.”
Don’t get your hopes high just yet as Lens is only great at finding only a few things including, home decor ideas, things to wear and food to eat. Results are expected to get better as more and more users try out the feature. The tool’s range of objects is also expected to widen as more people use it.

The company also launched Instant Idea; a tool that not only let you find ideas using objects you see out in the world, but do the same when you are on Pinterest. When you find an idea that appears interesting, all you have to do is to tap the circle that shows on each Pin to instantly unlock related ideas. “Circle a clawfoot bathtub to see similar tub ideas, or an asparagus dish for more recipes.
