Are you excited to own an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset? Even though the company didn’t announce its launch date yet, you can now make a preorder on January 6, 2016.
In a blog post published by the company, it announced the pre-order date of said headset. Oculus co-founder will also answer questions on a Reddit AMA this Wednesday at 9 pm ET.
As regards to its cost, the company did not announce as the post was just an announcement of an announcement.
However, when the preorders will open, the pricing and ship date will be revealed.
The headset’s release was first announced and confirmed in the middle of 2015 when it was announced that it would ship in the first quarter of this year.
Another gadget that will be released this year by Oculus is the Oculus Touch, a motion controller. It was supposed to follow Rift in shipping during the first half of 2016. However, there was a delay because the company wanted to focus on enhancing its tracking accuracy and ergonomics. When the Rift will launch, it will be shipped with an Xbox One Controller.
For casual buyers, Rift will remain out of reach. A machine that can power up the device would run around $1000. VR is ideal for gamers and enthusiasts who are willing to invest in higher-end machines. Most headsets for VR could cost hundred dollars.
The Rift’s launching will be a huge leap for consumers of virtual reality. In March 2013, Oculus’ first development kit was released. A year later, the company was acquired by Facebook for $2 billion. After that, it quickly faced competition from HTC and Sony’s high-end headsets.
In late 2015, Oculus partnered with Samsung to build the Gear VR, which is a smartphone-powered headset with a price tag of $99. The Gear VR is quite different from the Rift as it tracks users using the three-dimensional space.
The next big question for virtual reality is how to build a catalog of games, videos, and experiences. Oculus Rift will be shipped with a copy of EVE: Valkyrie.
Other Rift titles would include Adrift, Edge of Nowhere and RPG Chronos. Darkness and Dead Secret are also coming to Rift. As the company partnered with Microsoft, Rift users can stream non-VR games from the Xbox One.
But without the release date, it will be difficult for VR developers to make clearer announcements. If the pre-order date would not be changed, it would mean that VR fans could finally get their headsets in less than a month.
For the developers of Rift, they’re not rushing to take pre-orders. They don’t need the VR fans’ money right now. According to them, they wanted it that way to make sure that their consumers will have a great experience.
If you’re an avid fan of VR, you might need to be more patient and wait for a few weeks to finally get the long-awaited Oculus Rift.
