Nokia may launch its first smartphone running on the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating platform before Apple launches the iPhone 5.
The struggling Finnish handsets maker has been rumored in the past to launch its first Windows Phone 8 device before the iPhone 5 launch but the rumor has heightened again following comments made by its Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop.
Reuters reports that Elop has stressed that Nokia is sticking to Windows Phone and that Windows Phone 8 devices will soon be unveiled by the company.
According to Reuters, Elop said in an interview in Oslo that: “In today’s war … (between) Android, Apple and Windows, we are very clear, we are fighting that with the Windows phone.”
This comment serves as a reminder that Nokia is putting its hopes on Windows Phone for its future in the smartphone market.
Nokia will hold its Nokia World 2012 event in Helsinki on September 5 to 6. This is where the company is expected to debut its first Windows Phone 8 smartphone.
