The Nokia brand name will start to appear on Microsoft’s Bing Maps not only on Windows Phones, but also on rival handsets with the mobile navigation app installed such as Research In Motion (RIM).

According to Pocket-lint, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said that handset owners would start to see the Nokia branding soon, and not only the Finnish company’s own smartphones.

“You’ll starting seeing the word ‘Nokia’ on a map that you get from Microsoft properties over a period of time,” said Elop in an exclusive interview with Pocket-lint at the CES in Las Vegas.

The Nokia and Microsoft partnership did not disclose this information until now so news will likely surprise BlackBerry maker RIM, which already announced to add Bing Maps to the BlackBerry OS.

“Even if you are on a BlackBerry device, who recently said they were going to start using Bing Maps,” he added.

Nokia will start to ramp up efforts in promoting the Windows Phone mobile operating system and Elop wants to gamble on Nokia’s location-based system.

He said, “Part of the relationship we established with Microsoft is that we are clearly placing a bet on the Windows Phone platform. [In return] they are placing a bet on our location-based platform: mapping, navigation and so forth.”

The CEO promised to expand its branding not only to Bing Maps, saying, “In the time ahead, what you will see is, across all the Microsoft properties including Bing maps, more and more work will be done by Nokia.”

In what probably thwarted talks of the companies’ alleged one-sided business relationship, Elop told Pocket-lint, “We did that for important reasons as we had the better mapping assets so it made sense. But it also creates some balance in the relationship with Microsoft.”
