Nintendo Wants A Piece of Mobile Gaming Now

Earlier this month, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata discussed the possibility of bringing Nintendo games to the mobile gaming market with the help of popular Japanese mobile gaming firm, DeNA. DeNA is currently in the process of developing original games for smart phones featuring the ever popular characters we have loved over the years from Nintendo.

This news comes after Konami, the popular gaming firm of Contra, Castlevania, and Metal Gear Solid fame, announced that it will focus on mobile gaming as the main platform. Earlier this year, Sega also announced that they will venture in the PC and mobile gaming market and are restructuring their branding and marketing strategies.

But while the claims of Konami are laughable to say the least, following the recent claims of friction between Konami and Hideo Kohima, the maker of Metal Gear Solid, Nintendo intends to expand its capabilities into the mobile market rather cautiously.

Iwata claimed that most companies look for the whales in mobile gaming, the hardcore players who won’t think twice before spending thousands on in-game purchases, but that’s not the case for Nintendo. He said:

“My understanding of how to succeed in the Japanese market now is to find a limited number of generous consumers who are willing to spend a lot and analyze what encourages them to spend. The basis of our strategy will be how we can receive a small amount of money from a wide range of consumers.”

Nintendo, as Iwata says, is aiming for ‘wide and small’, not the ‘narrow and large’ market that most developers intend to target. However, Ben Cousins, popular free-to-play developer, did have his concerns with the tedious approach Nintendo is going for, something that a lot of gaming firms have tried in the past, only to cater to whales later on.
