Microsoft to Acquire Bethesda for $7.5 Billion

Is this the largest acquisition in the video game industry?

Microsoft to Acquire Bethesda for $7.5 Billion

On Monday, Microsoft announced that it has struck a deal with ZeniMax Media. By acquiring it, it means that it will now be the owner of video game publisher Bethesda Softworks.

When the deal is done, Microsoft will own The Elder Scrolls, Quake, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Fallout, and Starfield. These games will be added to its Xbox Game Pass. It’s a cloud gaming service based on subscription. Currently, it gained 15 million subscribers.

The deal will be finalized next year, though.

By adding Bethesda to its profile, Microsoft will have up 15 to 23 creative studio teams.

According to Microsoft

“Quality differentiated content is the engine behind the growth and value of Xbox Game Pass—from Minecraft to Flight Simulator. As a proven game developer and publisher, Bethesda has seen success across every category of games, and together, we will further our ambition to empower the more than three billion gamers worldwide.”

Bethesda is one of the biggest companies in the video gaming industry. However, some game enthusiasts are not happy with the company’s games as they are sometimes buggy. Its Wolfensteins, for one, is deeply flawed.

Then again, The Doom Eternal, which was released this year, sold 3 million copies during its launch. The Elder Scrolls series also sold 30 million copies in 2016.

The huge deal is three times higher than what Microsoft paid for Mojang, the company that developed Minecraft. That said, this deal is the most expensive acquisition ever.

Although Bethesda has been acquired, the game developer will be working on the same games made by the same studios for years.

In a blog post, Bethesda said that the acquisition allows them to

“make even better games going forward. Microsoft is an incredible partner and offers access to resources that will make us a better publisher and developer. We believe that means better games for you to play. Simply put – we believe that change is an important part of getting better. We believe in pushing ourselves to be better. To innovate. To grow.”

Will this acquisition affect the number of pre-orders of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S?

It may not affect sales. The reason for this is that most gamers have already made up their minds on what console to buy.

Even though it may not significantly affect the console’s sales, the deal is a long-term investment. It can help in attracting more gamers to the Xbox cloud gaming platform.

When Microsoft announced the deal, many gamers used social media to react to the news. Although some were excited, others feared that the games would not be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Currently, Bethesda games can be played on multiple platforms.

Bethesda will still debut its Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo on PS5 as its timed console exclusives. But future games will be available for Game Pass video game service.

Microsoft may or may not make Bethesda games exclusive to its platforms. But analysts are saying that Microsoft should remain the games to be available in multiple consoles.
