Gmail Go, the lighter version of Gmail has now become generally available to all. It means when you go to the Play Store right away, you will find Gmail Go ready and available for download.
The version was quietly made available on the Play Store sometime this week; exact date is anyone’s guess. As to be expected, you will not be able to use some of the features in the main app in this lighter one.
The bottom bar is not there, so do not expect to see Google Meet in Gmail Go, which means you will not be able to create or join a meeting at the moment. There is no word from Google whether this would someday become available; but you can always use the main email app if the need becomes urgent.
It is nice of Google to make Gmail Go available for all considering that some users may not necessarily like the idea of using an email app that takes a lot of space on the device.
That said, you may not be able to use some of the cool features in the main app; and this is understandable.
Two years ago, Google added to the list of its Go app when it launched a lightweight version of its Gmail email app called “Gmail Go.” Gmail Go consumes less space on your phone, and does not drain your data like the primary Gmail app. You will be able to access basic Gmail features including connecting multiple accounts, attachments, conversation view, and push notification for messages.
Compared with the regular Gmail app, Gmail Go only takes about 25 MB of space on your device as against 47 MB of storage space on your phone. This leaves you with loads of space to install or use other apps on your phone without slowing things down.
Still on Gmail; this time, the main app, a new update announced last month has made it the default email app for iOS 14. With this, the Gmail app can now be set as the default email app on both iPhone and the iPad.
Before the update, Apple had released iOS 14, and added the option for you to set third-party email apps as the default for iPhone and iPad devices as long as they are running on the latest version of Apple’s latest OS.
You will have to update your version of the Gmail app for iOS to the latest one, then proceed to Settings on either iPad or iPhone, scroll down and tap the Gmail logo. Tap default email app, then tap Gmail.
