Facebook is stepping it up with plans to launch its first smartwatch. Though, official release date has not been confirmed, the social media giant is reportedly planning to roll out the smartwatch in the summer of 2022.

Among other features, the smartwatch will have two cameras, heart rate monitor, Instagram, and a host of other apps. Videos taken with the detachable cameras can be shared across Facebook, Instagram and other apps owned by the social media giant.

Per The Verge, Facebook has added a camera in front of the watch basically for video calling, while a 1080p auto-focus camera on the back can be used for capturing footage when detached from the stainless steel frame on the wrist. As confirmed by two people familiar with the story, Facebook is also tapping other companies to create accessories for attaching the camera hub to things like backpacks.

The smartwatch is not Facebook’s first venture into hardware manufacturing. The social media giant had in the past launched a couple of other products. That said, the smartwatch is the company’s first attempt at making a wrist hardware, which could open up another area of competition with companies like Apple and Samsung.

Facebook is reportedly working with two of America’s top wireless carries to support LTE connectivity in the watch. That means it will need to be paired with a phone to work. The watch will come in three different colors of white, black, and gold, with Facebook hoping to initially sell volume in the low six figures.

Facebook launched Portal and Portal+ video chat apps in the US in 2019. Portal is a hardware that can be used to call other Portal users or anyone on either Facebook or Facebook Messenger. It is also integrated with ability to play music through Pandora and Spotify, or stream video straight from Facebook Watch. If you have seen the Amazon Echo Show before, then you probably have an idea what the smaller Portal looks like.

The Portal+ on the other hand, is the bigger of the two devices, and is big enough to work perfectly in your living room. Whichever of the two devices you settle for, you will still be able to make video chatting with the availability of a wide-angle camera capable of capturing your body, and tracking every of your movement within the living room. Portal+ has a 15.6-inch, 1080p screen, two louder speakers, a subwoofer, making it better for playing music Portal+ video calling device.
