But not all users can use it, yet.
Facebook wants to unify its properties. One great example is its recently launched cross-platform messaging on Instagram and Messenger. With this merging, Instagram users can also utilize the chat features of Messenger.
It means that if you wish to contact an Instagram user, you can do so without the need to download and install Instagram, as long as you have the Messenger app.
Facebook said that over 100 billion messages are being sent to family and friends every day. To stay in touch, people are using video calls, send memes or GIFS, and funny photos.
Messenger now has over a billion users. For that reason, the company is merging the two platforms. In that way, Instagram will have the best chat features of Messenger.
Why Facebook Launched the Cross-Platform Messaging on Instagram and Messenger?
“In our research, four out of five people who use messaging apps in the US say that spending more time connecting with friends and family on these apps is important to them, yet one out of three people sometimes find it difficult to remember where to find a certain conversation thread. With this update, it will be even easier to stay connected without thinking about which app to use to reach your friends and family.”https://about.fb.com/news/2020/09/new-messaging-features-for-instagram/
This new messaging experience also includes some features that Facebook copied from its competitors. For instance, the Watch Together is a feature that allows you to watch trending videos with your family and friends as you chat with them. This is similar to Discord’s screen sharing feature.
Facebook also copied the vanishing texts of Snapchat through the Vanish mode. This feature allows you to send a message to someone. After sending and being seen, the message disappears. This kind of feature is also associated with Signal.
But the merging is expected. The company has been hinting at for a few months now. Some users have been notified that they could soon use Instagram to message their friends who are on Facebook.
Thankfully, you’re not forced to use the new messaging feature. It means that you can simply reject the update.
Apart from messaging features, Instagram and Messenger users can look for profiles across the apps simultaneously.
If you can’t use the new feature now, then it means that you’re not part of the select markets. As to when it will be available for a wide audience, Facebook didn’t say. However, it will soon expand worldwide in the coming months.
With this integration, we can expect that Facebook will also merge its other messaging platform, WhatsApp.
This announcement is part of Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to transition his empire from just a mere social media site to a platform that focuses on private communication. Mark hopes that integrating messages on various apps will help in capturing the majority of its market.
Integrating Messenger into WhatsApp can be a huge challenge for Facebook considering the latter’s end-to-end encryption technology. However, the company will also face extreme scrutiny from regulators who are already suspicious of Facebook’s power in mobile messaging.
