There’s a common misconception among adults that school is just for kids – that once you reach a certain age, you just have to play the cards you’re dealt. That’s patently untrue.
Then, there are adults who are nervous about re-entering the academic system. “What if it’s too difficult?” “What if it’s too embarrassing?” “What if it interferes with an already busy work schedule?” While those concerns are understandable, they, too, are based on misconceptions.
The plain fact is, it’s never too late to go back to school. School isn’t a time in your life – it’s a state of mind and an aspiration for self-betterment. And the concerns surrounding going back to school can easily be.
There are virtually no good reasons why you shouldn’t go back to school. And there are several reasons why you should.
1) You Can Increase Your Employability or Change Career Directions
Restarting your education can be a fantastic way to energize your career. High school diplomas, college degrees and university degrees still play a significant role in the hiring process of many jobs, especially those with upward mobility.
If you feel as though your career has peaked prematurely, or that you are stagnating in a particular pay range, consider going back to school to learn skills pertinent to your career trajectory. If you want a complete change in career, determine what prerequisite courses you need to make that goal a reality.
This may require starting at the high school level to finish a diploma or gain prerequisite credits, but don’t worry. It’s not like the high school you remember growing up!
2) Online Learning Is Flexible, Supportive, and Individualized
Nowadays, you can enrol in an online high school, which makes the process of going back to school easy in many ways
Online schools offer flexible schedules that won’t interfere with your current work schedule. You are typically given 12 months to complete a course and can do the work whenever you choose. You can use as much or as little of the 12-month timeframe as you need.
Online schools also offer a tremendous system of support. In contrast to traditional classrooms, your online support is available 24/7. Even if you get off work at 11 pm, start your studies at midnight and have a burning question about the course material at 1 am, you’ll get the guidance and support you need.
Lastly, online education lets you individualize your experience. Choose from an array of available courses to take online and work at your own pace. If part of the course work is particularly challenging, you can take it slow to ensure you learn and retain the information.
3) Learning New Things Is Fulfilling and Rewarding
Aside from its career benefits and online ease, going back to school is simply rewarding. Learning new things is a fundamentally fulfilling aspect of being human. It can help foster a sense of personal pride and achievement, and allow you to see the world in a new way.
If you want to go back to school but are concerned it might be too late, just remember, you can always go back to school. It’s easy to do online, professionally advantageous and richly rewarding. What are you waiting for?
