After two months of being absent from the Amazon Echo Show, YouTube has finally returned. In addition to YouTube, Amazon also expands video services by launching Vimeo and Dailymotion support.
Amazon wants to offer its customers a service that enables them to watch more video content from Vimeo, YouTube and other sources on Echo Show.
The initial implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violated the terms of service of the said video app as it created a broken user experience. But the two companies seemed to have resolved the issue.
There’s a new version of YouTube Echo Show with a changed interface, but it resembles that of the desktop version. You don’t need to access the Echo Show just to see the change. You just have to go to youtube.com on your desktop, and you already know what it looks like.
The updated version of the app means that some of the vital features are also back in play on the Echo. Next video recommendations and subscriptions are missing features in the original app, but they’re now back. Voice controls are still working on the new update.
When did it launch?
In summer, Amazon introduced Echo Show with YouTube. However, in September, Google blocked the device’s access to the said video service. The reason for the block is that Amazon’s way of implementing YouTube violated the service’s terms of service. The violations include rules about branding and functionality.
However, Amazon stated that Google disabled it without notification to its customers. Although it’s now back on the Echo Show, Amazon didn’t comment on how it worked with Google. But as mentioned earlier, the new interface is similar to how the service works on the desktop.
This is just the latest conflict between the two companies. For one, Amazon utilizes a modified version of Google’s Android for some of its devices. But the modified version does not have the original Google apps. In 2015, it stopped selling Chromecast.
But in recent weeks, there are signs that Amazon is trying to resolve some of their arguments. For example, Amazon started to add support for Chromecast to Amazon Music app. Despite those signs, it’s still unclear if the two companies are going to bury the hatchet.
Is Amazon Echo Show worth it?
The Echo Show has a lot to offer. It comes with video and touchscreen controls. It stands out from the crowd because of its hands-free video calling command center. Its sound quality is excellent. It’s actually better than the audio quality of Amazon Echo, which distorts bass when played at high volumes. The Echo Show has clean and rich bass because of the Dolby speakers inside it.
However, the design may seem outdated. During its launch, the touchscreen visuals may not be enough to bring the voice assistant to life. Nevertheless, the device offers great features for users who are interested in video chatting with their family and friends. Then again, it needs more improvement and development before it becomes a huge hit.
The Echo Show is the most attractive Alexa gadget. However, its success will depend on the outside developers and Amazon.
