What You Need Before You Study Abroad

Source – https://www.forbes.com/sites/ceciliarodriguez/2018/03/13/planning-study-abroad-the-10-best-european-countries-for-international-students/#453176db61e6

Studying abroad can be one of those experiences best described as life-changing. When you study abroad for any reason, whether during college or otherwise, you’re likely to have so many enriching experiences. Studying abroad gives you the chance to see those places that were on your bucket list, and to do so in a more in-depth way than you would if you simply took a vacation.

When you study abroad, you have the chance to meet new people and build relationships that are likely to last a lifetime, and you can immerse yourself in the language and culture of your destination.

Of course as with anything, before you study abroad, you want to ensure you’re prepared. The following are some apps and other items that you might want before you leave for a study abroad experience.

Language Translation Apps

According to IBS International Business Seminars, it’s fairly of where they’re going. Even if they know the language at a basic level, they might not be completely comfortable with it to the point where they can function day-to-day.

To combat this, IBS recommends downloading a translation app. There are free apps like Google translate that you can use, and there are also apps that are designed to work in specific parts of the world.

While you shouldn’t use a language translator as a way to avoid learning the language, it can help in those early days when you’re adjusting to life abroad.

Convert Any Unit

Convert Any Unit is an app that you can download for free, and it can be a lot more helpful than you might think. Convert Any Unit allows you to add in different numbers or measurements and then have them converted into what you’re used to at home. This could include something that you’re buying at a market for example or temperatures.

Convert Any Unit has more than four million downloads, and you can also convert different measurements such as miles to kilometers.

There are other similar apps that can help with conversions, but Convert Any Unit is especially popular.

While you’re at it, look for an app that will manage currency conversions as well.

Electronics That Operate with Dual Voltage

Something you might forget as you’re preparing to study abroad is the fact that your electronics aren’t going to work. They’re going to operate on a different voltage. You can bring a converter, but what frequently happens with a converter is that if you’re using it with your electronics, it can cause them to stop working.

What you might want to do is find something that’s dual voltage or has the right plugs for where you’re going.

A converter may be fine in a pinch, but it can be problematic over the long-term if you’re moving somewhere for a period of time. You will want to bring a universal adapter as well.

Toiletries

Sometimes when you travel, you might just wait until you arrive at your destination to buy toiletries, rather than packing them. This isn’t always the best idea, however.

You may want to bring your favorite toiletries because it can be difficult to find high-quality products in other countries, depending on your destination. Toiletries also tend to be quite a bit more expensive in some other cities and areas of the world than they are in the U.S.

You’ll have to pack these in your checked luggage, but you’ll probably find that it was worth it to bring them with you.

Similar to your favorite toiletries, you should bring medicine as well. Bring the basics that you could see yourself needing such as cold medicine and over-the-counter pain medicine. What you find overseas may be completely different from what you’re used to.

Packing Cubes

It can be stressful to think about packing for an extended trip away from home. Packing cubes might alleviate some of that stress. Packing cubes make it easier to pack everything in an organized way and keep it organized while you’re traveling. They can also be a space saver so you can reasonably fit more in your bags.

Rome2Rio

Finally, another app that you should consider aside from language and unit conversion apps is called Rome2Rio. You can also use the desktop version of the site.

Rome2Rio is a great tool that searches anywhere in the world and helps you get from one place to the other. For example, you can search for train routes, as well as bus, ferry and flight routes.
