Will Uber add the long-awaited tip option for its drivers?

If you are using Uber then you may already know that the famous app doesn’t support a tip option. And Uber doesn’t want to include this option. Well that might change. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) announced that it may establish a new rule that would require car service companies to find a way to include a tipping option.

So, Uber might need to add an option inside to app to support tipping the driver. The car-service company is not against tipping the driver with cash, but the app did not had any immediate plans for tips via the platform.

According to the TLC announcement the commission supports the Independent Drivers Guild (IDG) and it says that drivers are losing thousands of dollars of income because there is not a way to get tips.

On the other hand Uber said in a statement:

“Uber is always striving to offer the best earning opportunity for drivers and we are constantly working to improve the driver experience. That’s why, in New York City, we partnered with the Machinists Union to make sure current and future Uber NYC drivers have a stronger voice and launched a series of new tools and support policies for drivers.”

The Independent Drivers Guild said about the suggestion:

“Today’s decision is a vitally important step forward for drivers. In-app tipping will mean a raise of hundreds of millions of dollars for New York City drivers each year. Drivers have long been denied access to the kinds of benefits and labor protections many workers take for granted, such as paid sick leave or the minimum wage.”

IDG founder Jim Conigliaro said:

“As a result, New York City’s professional drivers have traditionally depended on gratuities for a substantial portion of their income. Cuts to driver pay across the ride-hail industry has made tipping income more important than ever.”

But, why Uber doesn’t want to include the tips option? The car service platform has said in the past that tips might get influenced by the rider’s preferences (gender, race, and overall behavior). Also it could lead drivers to flock around more affluent places in order to get more tips. And the amount of the tip could lead to drivers rate the riders accordingly. In other words the more you tip the better.

On the other hand if you are using Lyft then you know that you can tip your driver. And they are not the only one, so tipping the driver is not that complicated. For the record Lyft brought the tip option in 2012 and according to the company drivers managed to gather $200 million in tips. Wow!
