Twitter Tests New Features to Enhance Positive Conversations

Twitter is not always the best place for you to hang out if you wish to have a friendly conversation with some individuals. And the social media wants to change it.

As The Verge reported, Twitter is working on some designs that aim to encourage friendly conversations on the platform. However, the social media emphasized that the features were not final. In that case, these functionalities may or may not roll out.

Updated Thread View

It is one of the new features that are similar to iMessage and Facebook Messenger. Earlier this year, one of Twitter’s product managers, Sara Haider, stated that joining or beginning a conversation is not easy. She tweeted in August that the platform was testing some functionalities to make Twitter more conversational.

Other changes are more subtle. Twitter might add a status indicator. In this way, users will know whether or not that someone is active. Some people change their display names to show that they were on Twitter or finding things to discuss. Twitter believes that when people are online at the same time, they are more likely to start a conversation.

Furthermore, the platform is experimenting with color-coded conversations. This feature is useful so you can see the tweets from individuals that you follow in various colors. In that case, it will be a lot simpler for you to follow popular discussions.

Twitter may also implement a reply field just below the tweet. You can see this function when you scroll your feed. The “reply” is a new field, which can be found next to the retweet and heart buttons. Although you can already reply to a twee, some new users are not aware that they can just reply to some tweets by simply tapping the conversation bubble.

As previously mentioned, these new features attempt to encourage positive discussions on the platform. They also reduce hateful comments and abusive messages. Even though these features aim to promote positive discussion, they do not resolve harassment directly on the platform. Twitter’s other divisions are already working on that matter.

These features may also assist friendly individuals in finding each other or they can start tweeting each other.

Ice Breaker

It is said to be another version of its pinned tweet. It aims to promote conversations. In this feature, you can pin an icebreaker and place it on top of your profile. It allows individuals that you wish to talk about that topic. It may help boost your followers’ enthusiasm and make it a discussion.

Among these features, people are more excited about the icebreaker. Creating a presence indicator may not be that useful to most users. But all of these changes could promote better engagement and encourage positive discussion among users. However, they may not be beneficial to some users who are not excited about the amount of discussion on the platform. Those who are victims of harassment on this platform may not be pleased about them, especially if they are encouraged to reply to each tweet.
