If you thought Facebook or Google+ is the fastest-growing social media platform in the world, you’d be wrong: it’s Twitter.
That’s according to new data released by Global Web Index which corresponds to the last quarter of 2012.
According got the data, Twitter grew an astounding 40 percent for the last three quarters of the just-ended year.
To give you perspective, that’s 288 million active users per month. Furthermore, according to Global Web Index, Twitter had a relatively miniscule number of monthly active users in July 2009 at 35.5 million.
The research firm says that out of all the internet users in the whole world, more than 1 in 5 now use Twitter.
According to the social media and web market research firm, their index included 31 markets and that “active” users are users of these social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Google+ who used these sites or contributed to these sites within the past month.

Well, I think it has been in the internet longer than facebook, and many organisations have kicked in there first – it is in their use to try everything to maintain it – there they have a ready bas of fans and or customers and it is not so effective to start again with so much effort on another platform. In my opinion this is the explanation for twitter's success.
