Toshiba has surprised the tech world with the biggest tablet to date, the 13.3-inch-screened Toshiba Excite 13.
On Tuesday, Toshiba announced three new additions to the Toshiba Excite tablet family and among them is the Excite 13.
Together with the big-screened tablet, Toshiba also announced the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 which you may have guessed correctly to feature 7-inch and 10-inch screens.
All of the tablets will feature quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processors, the fames Nvidia processor with 4-PLUS-1 technology.
They will also all be powered by the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile operating system.
First off, we discuss the biggest of the bunch, the Toshiba Excite 13. It’s most striking feature is the 13.3-inch screen Toshiba describes as an “AutoBrite LED Backlit display”.
The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a screen resolution of 1600×900 with 10-finger multi-touch support.
The 16:9 aspect ratio is the most popular for widescreen movies and video clips so the Excite 13 should be at home playing most videos.
It should also play HD movies and complicated games with ease as the Excite 13 is powered by a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, GeForce graphics, and 1GB in RAM.
However, despite its large screen, the Toshiba Excite 13 is only 0.4 inches thin and 2.2 pounds heavy.
Having that much space in its chassis, the Excite 13 packs more battery giving it battery life of up to 13 hours, Toshiba said.
Other features of the Toshiba Excite 13 are: a four-speaker system with exclusive sound enhancements by Toshiba and SRS Labs, a tablet stand, Micro USB port, Micro HDMI port, and SD card port.
Toshiba’s pitch for the Excite 13 is “More Screen for More of Everything”.
Internal storage capacities for the Excite 13 will be 32GB and 64GB.
In the middle of the pack of tablets Toshiba announced on Tuesday is the Excite 10, a 10-inch-screened tablet Toshiba says is “Smart”, “Speedy”, and “Durable”.
It packs a 10-inch “AutoBrite LED Backlit display” with aresolution of 1280×800 pixels, the same type of display the Excite 13 has albeit in a smaller size and resolution.
Tipping the scales at 1.32 pounds and measuring 0.35 inches in thickness, the Excite 10 is rated for 10 hours of battery life with the ability to stay alive for seven days on stand-by.
Like the Excite 13, it is also powered by a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and 1GB in RAM. It also has Micro USB, Micro HDMI and a full-size SD card slot.
Internal storage capacities for the Excite 10 will be 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.
The smallest of the bunch, the Toshiba Excite 7.7 will not be left behind in computing power as it also packs a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor like the Excite 13 and Excite 10.
It will also pack 1GB in RAM.
Nonetheless, it features a different kind of screen compared to its bigger siblings as it has a 7.7-inch AMOLED display Toshiba touts is the main feature of the tablet aside from its size which makes it easier to carry.
The Excite 7.7 is 0.3-inch thin and 13.4 ounces light.
Like its brothers, the Excite 7.7 will have a Micro USB port though it forgoes the Micro HDMI port and will have a MicroSD card slot and not a full-sized SD card slot.
Internal storage capacities for the Excite 10 will be 16GB and 32GB.
Toshiba’s Carl Pinto said in a statement with the announcement of the Excite 13, Excite 10 and Excite 7.7 that Toshiba’s reason for releasing three more tablets with different screen sizes is because “one size does not fit all”.
“One size does not fit all, so we are carefully considering how and where people are using tablets and designing form factors to best suit various needs,” the vice president of product development at Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. Digital Products Division said.
“With amazingly thin and light designs, our new Excite family of tablets continues to incorporate what consumers have come to love about Toshiba tablets: essential ports for a more complete tablet computing experience plus durability that ensures they can go the distance,” he added.
According to Toshiba, the Excite 13, Excite 10 and Excite 7.7 will all be fitted with 5MP rear-facing cameras, 2MP front-facing cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and SRS sound technology.
As for availability, Toshiba says that the Excite 10 tablet will be available for purchase at the beginning of May 2012 for $449.99 for the 16GB model, $529.99 for the 32GB model and $649.99 for the 64GB model.
The Excite 7.7 tablet will be available for purchase at the beginning of June 2012 for $499.99 for the 16GB model and $579.99 for the 32GB model.
The Excite 13 tablet will be available for purchase at the beginning of June 2012 for $649.99 for the 32GB model and $749.99 for the 64GB model.
