iOS 11 is three months away. It’s the latest mobile operating system of Apple that can change your iPhone and iPad. But it’s a significant upgrade for Apple’s new tablet. The latest iPad Pro can be a real laptop replacement for some people. Thanks to its revamped iOS.
In this post, let’s talk about the top features of iOS 11. Some of them were announced at Apple’s WWDC 2017.
1. It can scan QR Codes on Router
It means that you no longer have to type in the Wi-Fi passwords. iOS 11 comes with a QR code reader enabling users to scan the code on the router and connect to the network instantly. Another interesting function is that you can send your password over-the-air to another device, like your iPad. From your iPad, it’ll automatically fill all the required fields so the device can connect.
This feature is built in the native camera. It’s designed to start apps and websites after it reads the code. Now, when you line your camera to the reader that comes with a QR code, your device notifies you if you like to join the network. To connect, simply tap the connect button.
With this function, it makes a lot easier to connect when you’re in a restaurant, airport and other establishments offering free Wi-FI. This feature is almost the same as the AirPods pairing. Those who are connected to the network will see a notification informing them that another device wants to connect to the network.
Unfortunately, older iDevices can’t enjoy this function.
2. It has a dock.
The latest iPad Pro is designed as a laptop replacement for some people. With iOS 11, replacing it will be a lot easier. Thanks to the “dock” that’s similar to a Mac computer. Although it’s hidden, you can access it by swiping it up.
With the bottom app dock, you can quickly jump from one app to another, just like on your MacBook.
3. It allows drag and drop.
It’s another standout feature of iOS 11. With this feature, you can move images, for instance, between applications. However, this feature is limited to iPad because the company wants to make it as a PC replacement.
Then again, this function is buried inside the iOS filesystem. It works the same way on iPad. That is, you can drag an image from Photos to an iMessages thread. It can also work with links and bookmarks.
However, you can’t enable it without the use of an iOS simulator.
Although it’s not available on iPhone, this cool feature allows iPad to feel different from other tablets. It’s the first to offer such functionality.
4. It offers updates to camera and photos apps.
Apple has new photo and video formats. For video, it now supports HEVC and HEIF for images. These new formats can shrink photo and videos sizes up to 50 percent. With this feature, it can save valuable storage space on the iDevice. Unfortunately, these formats are only available on the new iPads and iPhones.
The iOS 11 features new editing options. With these options, you can choose a portion of the Live Photo that looks best.
The new iOS also allows cropping of Live Photos. It also features new Bounce and Long Exposure options, as well as Loop. Bounce works like Loop. That is, it loops over and over, just like a GIF. The only difference is that Bounce forwards and backwards. The Long Exposure option combines your Live Photo video and place it in a single shot to give a blur effect.
The Photos app has new dynamic support when you view Memories video through portrait or landscape mode. Through machine learning improvements, more types of Memories videos are generated.
5. It has Files app
iOS 11 introduces a Files app. It’s a new application that allows you to sort all your files. In here, you can browse, search and organize your files in one place. What’s great about it is that it lets you sort files from your other iOS devices, in iCloud Drive, Box, Google Drive and other services.
This is truly one way to say that Apple wants the iPad Pro to be the main computer for some people who don’t like using an iMac or MacBook.
6. It offers seamless iCloud syncing of iMessages.
With that in mind, iMessages will no longer take up your iDevice’s storage anymore. It means that when you delete an iMessage conversation on your iPad, that conversation will also disappear on your iPhone and MacBook. As a result, it frees up iMessage storage.
iMessages can take up a lot of space in your iDevice. All those messages are in the “Other” storage. Once iOS 11 is available, all iMessages are backed up to iCloud.
7. It offers person-to-person payment features.
Upgrading to iOS 11 lets you use Apple Pay’s person-to-person payment feature. It works the same way as PayPal and Venmo. The only difference is that it’s offered in an app-free solution.
Apple Pay payments utilize Touch ID to authenticate a transaction. Then, it uses iMessages to send payment to your friends or contacts. With this payment option, there’s no more excuse for you not to pay back your friends.
8. It enables lock screen and notification center in one place.
In iOS 11, lock screen and notification center are joining forces. That is, you can now easily see old alerts you’ve missed.
9. It offers “Do Not Disturb” when driving.
The iOS 11 has a Do Not Disturb feature while driving. With this feature, all notifications are shut off when you’re behind the wheel. This feature lets you drive safely. The best part of this function is that it sends a text to those people who are contacting you with a message that you’ll get back to them shortly.
To break through this feature, you can enter the word “urgent” so you can get in contact with someone while driving.
We can’t use these features yet because the official release of iOS 11 is still three months away. However, developers continue to discover new features now and then.
