Smartphones and tablets powered by the Google-spearheaded Android mobile operating system have been hijacked by a botnet, a Microsoft engineer has revealed.
Writing on his MSDN blog, Terry Zink says that botnet operators are controlling Android devices to send out spam.

Malware is still on its spree in threatening Android devices as statistics had quadrupled since the first quarter, according to Trend Micro.
During the first quarter, it recorded 6,000 Android threats, and Trend Micro had predicted that it would just double to 11,000 by the second quarter. Startlingly, it reached to 25,000 samples, more than double the forecast and over four times the earlier count. Almost 2 out of 5 Americans who buy an Apple iPhone do so after using an Android or BlackBerry smartphone, a new survey has found.
