NPD Group’s DisplaySearch has published data that indicates last year saw 73 million tablet PC shipments.
According to the market research and consulting firm’s calculations, the year-on-year (YoY) growth of tablets could reach 256 percent for 2011, with shipments hitting the 72.7 million mark for 25.5 percent of the mobile PC market.
“In the short term, tablet PCs will be the growth accelerant in the overall mobile PC market, as macroeconomic factors and hard drive motor supply issues impact the market for notebook PCs,” said DisplaySearch senior analyst Richard Shim in a press release. “In the longer term, notebook PC shipments will bounce back as ASPs (average selling prices) continue to decline, Windows 8 launches, and new form factors, such as ultrabooks, continue to emerge.”

Notebook PC shipments will expectedly reach 432 million by 2017 whereas tablet PC shipments expectations stand at around 383.3 million units, added the report.
DisplaySearch said that the emerging Ultrabook market will not push through until two years after due to its premium price tags, but consumers will fervently eye its sleek design and convenient features such as instant-on and longer battery life.
The firm reckons that tablet PC shipments will ride the increased demand for products with multicore processors, mature operating systems, burgeoning app repositories and hi-res displays.
Company predictions for tablets is that 25 percent of the tablets this year will have 250-300 pixels per inch displays.
