Killer’s MySpace profile put in Purgatory

Jared Lee Loughner, who allegedly shot at a crowd of people in a Tucson shopping center in Arizona yesterday, had his MySpace profile removed.  Loughner was arrested after Saturday’s mass shooting at the Arizona shopping center where Representative Gabrielle Giffords was meeting her constituents.  Giffords sustained a serious head injury and is now being treated at a local hospital in the intensive care unit.

Struggling social networking turned social media website MySpace is getting ready to begin a drastic restructuring program that will cut must of its international staff.  The move comes ahead of an expected sale of MySpace, which has been under pressure from its owner, NewsCorp, to increase revenues.

MySpace promises to encrypt user IDs

MySpace has promised to take three specific steps to protect user privacy after it was discovered that a developer had given user IDs to a data broker.  The social entertainment website said it will encrypt MySpace user IDs, use anonymous identifiers, and cease working with data brokers.

MySpace, Google finalize search, Ad deal

After months of uncertainty, MySpace and Google have finalized a multi-year search and advertizing agreement, under which Google will power MySpace search queries and search advertizing and also provide more ad display services.  Terms of the agreement between News Corp’s social entertainment site and the search engine giant were not disclosed.

Mike Jones, chief executive officer of MySpace, said the social networking website is not currently involved in any discussions over its sale or merger.
