Social media has changed a lot about our lives. It’s how we keep in contact with each other and how we discover what all those people we went to high school with are up to these days. We’ve never been more connected with the people we know than we are today thanks to social media. But we can also be connected to people we don’t know – celebrities and local businesses and social groups – all thanks to social media.

This change has given rise to a brand new phenomenon – the social media influencer. No longer do you need to be a celebrity to endorse a product. You can build a successful YouTube channel or Instagram following and watch the companies line up to ask you to endorse their products.

Social media has democratized the way we get information, whether that information be news or advertising. You no longer have to wait for the 6 o’clock news to tell you what is happening in the world right now. News comes at you fast in real time as it happens.

Many times you may even get it from the primary source instead of through the filter of the media. The same goes for advertisements. No longer do you have to rely on celebrity endorsements to choose your morning sickness pills or new hair products – you can get peer recommendations from social media influencers.

There are some rules that social media influencers have to follow, however, whether they are celebrities or not. If they are in a paid contract with a company they must disclose that face on any posts they make. Commonly used ways to do this include hashtags such as #ad or #sponsored, but some people go one step further to say things like, “I received compensation from makeupco to post this photo.”

Social media influencers are the people who do makeup tutorials on YouTube or who post travel photos to Instagram. You may share or like their posts every day without knowing it. You could even become one yourself with a little careful planning and hard work. Start building your social media following around something you love and see where things go from there. Who knows – the world may need a fresh perspective on woodworking!

Are you ready for a career change? Learn all about the evolution of the social media influencer from this infographic. Finally celebrities get to be chosen by the people!

I work as an IT consultant in the Toronto area and I love to write blogs about a variety of subjects. My passion for writing stems from the desire that everyone should have access to meaningful information. Whether it is a blog about society, culture, technology, or social media, I don’t want to miss the opportunity of sharing my thoughts with my friends and audience. Since I believe in mutual exchange of ideas, I am always on the lookout for a feedback on my writings.
