Cunning scammers have replaced iPad 2 units sold by major retailers in Canada who have then in turn unsuspectingly sold them to customers, a report from CTV.CA reveals.
According to the news organization, the scam works this way: a scammer buys an iPad 2 in cash, replaces the real iPad 2 with a clay tablet, rewraps the iPad 2 packaging, and returns the whole package to the store.
These iPad 2 tablets which have been swapped for slabs of clay are then sold unwittingly to customers.
According to CTV, Walmart, London Drugs, Future Shop and Best Buy have confirmed that they are dealing with the scam.

Other reports say that not only did the scammers replace the iPad 2 unit in the box with clay, they also replaced the charger with clay and that the weight of the packaged when rewrapped is near the weight of an original iPad 2 package.
These retailers are changing their return policy in reaction to the ongoing scam by breaking the seal of the iPad 2 boxes to check if they have been replaced.
