Review - Bitdefender Total Security 2018

Bitdefender Total Security 2018 falls in a category of security suites that contain more features than you would expect and that’s the reason behind it being termed as a “mega-suite”.

Every year, launches new security features and technological improvements to its suites. In July 2017, it introduced its latest offerings that involve double-layered defense against malware and ransomware, web cam hacking and several others.

Ransomware protection

Ransomware is a cause of concern for most PC users. A recent example is the May, 2017 cyberattack in the UK when some hospitals had to shut down their IT systems while they struggled to protect their computers against the cyberattack.

Another unwelcome possibility of malware infection is that cybercriminals can infest your computer with malware that collects passwords and your personal information. Once the personal information is hacked, they can use it to commit a full-blown identity theft. You’ll never know that you’re a victim until you receive the burgeoning credit card bill. The good thing is that the ransomware protection feature of Bitdefender makes it possible to protect your files from this attack.

The feature, Safe Files, enables users to mark their files and other documents to keep them safe from hackers. If hackers do breach your system, they can’t access those “safe” files. You also get notifications about the threats.

Private vault creation

In addition to protecting your files against ransomware, you can also place them in a safe place. No one can access them without a password. It’s a handy tool especially if you have a secret project that you don’t want others to see or access.

Safer online transactions

The latest feature, Safepay, is one of its handiest functions that allows you to transfer funds, purchase products, and do other eCommerce activities without having to worry about the safety of the transactions.

If you’re transferring money online, for example, this feature prompts you to use the tool to give you extra protection. Once you click the “yes” button, the feature takes over. It also comes with a Safepay browser that lets you safely make eCommerce or online banking transactions using it, instead of Chrome, Firefox and the other main browsers available.

Safepay is a unique browser that secures all your transactions so you can be sure you won’t be the next victim of a fraud. The latest feature also fills out credit card details in the billing fields, if you enabled it.

Anti-Theft

suite offers a feature that protects your device against theft, in case someone stole your PC or laptop. It works like Find iPhone. You can lock it up and delete your files and data. Whoever took your computer wouldn’t be able to access that sensitive data you have on your device. Unfortunately, it won’t prevent that someone from stealing your device.

Parental advisory

Kids are the primary target for blackmail and webcam extortion. That said, your kids’ smartphones and PCs should have protection against online hackers.

The latest launch of Bitdefender comes with a Parental Advisor model that lets you monitor your kids’ activities. You’ll know whether or not they’re chatting with strangers on their devices. Monitoring of their access to some websites is also possible with this feature.

Because it seems you’re spying on your kids, it might be ideal to let them know that they have this feature on their devices. With this tool, you can learn more about your children. It can also help on how to communicate with your children better.

What’s great about it is that it picks the best privacy features for your kids based on their age. Furthermore, it allows parents to setup curfew hours. For example, they can only access Facebook from 7 AM to 3 PM.

Webcam protection

One of the ways to protect your laptop’s webcam against prying eyes is to cover it with tape. Facebook’s CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg, for example, covers his laptop’s webcam. But hackers can easily tap the cam and take a peek inside users’ private lives. From there, they can blackmail them.

Hackers use Trojan malware to trap users into installing and downloading the malware. Falling into the trap allows hackers to enable or disable your cam remotely. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to readily tell something is amiss.

Teenagers are mostly the target of this trap. The reason for this is that they easily get excited to click on the links sent to them by someone they don’t know and hence they become easy targets of cybercriminals. The government encourages parents to check their kids’ online activities regularly.

The webcam protection feature in the suite protects the users’ webcam and prevents unauthorized tapping on the cam. The hacking tool used to tap on your webcam is considered malware. Bitdefender Total Security has a malware identification feature that detects the said hacking tool and removes it from your computer. It notifies you of any new apps that are trying to install or download anything to your computer. It gives you full control of the people who can see you through your webcam.

You may think that you don’t need this tool but you could be wrong! Even if you followed Mark Zuckerberg’s way of protecting his computers against webcam hacking, you still have built-in microphones on your computer that hackers can use to listen in on your conversations.

The webcam protection of Bitdefender thus blocks any unauthorized access to your webcam.

Conclusion

These are just salient features of Bitdefender’s latest security tools. Total Security comes with lots of features, making it a unique product that you can download and use on your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices. With this tool, you can be sure you’re safe while using your computer.

The subscription covers up to 10 different devices. Managing your devices is possible through a Bitdefender account. You can’t access it, however, if you don’t have an active subscription.

For starters, this suite offers excellent protection against malware attacks. It shows to be effective against web-based threats, like phishing pages and malware-hosting websites. It has enough features to qualify it as a ‘Complete’ security suite.
