When was the last time you went home from work and checked your email as soon as you walked through the door? In today’s society it can be difficult to stop working, especially when you have easy, unfettered access to all your work stuff when you go home. Oh, let me make sure no one needed anything from me, you justify to yourself. But really you are killing yourself by refusing to take a break. It’s time to restore balance between your work life and your home life.
The times, they are a-changin, as Bob Dylan once said. There used to be a clear delineation between work life and home life and you would punch in at 9 a.m. and out at 5 p.m. and that was that. Now there’s technology that enables us to work from anywhere, and since work is such a major part of who we are that’s just exactly what we do whenever possible. It’s great that we can avoid using our paid vacation days (or even taking an unpaid one) when there’s inclement weather that keeps us from physically going in to the office. But in a world where 40% of people say it’s totally fine to answer work emails at the dinner table, something’s got to give.
That same technology that causes work to creep into your personal life can also be used to restore balance to your life. We’re never going back to the 40 hour work week where you have to be at your desk between 9 and 5 each day. There’s a better way to get your work done and save yourself a little time.
Remote working is great on occasion because it allows you to cut out commute times and put that time toward something else. Negotiating for a flexible schedule is also a great way to restore balance in your life – no one wants to miss out on career day because of a rigid and inflexible work schedule that can be easily made up at another time.
Take a look at your life and figure out where things are getting off kilter. As work life continues to change, people need to ask themselves what they need to do to maintain balance in their lives.
