Google has now decided to deal with the problem of copyright infringement and piracy. These two issues are augmenting exponentially. Seeing how the company has received up to 1.2 million pleas for URL removal every month, with the company highlighted the most – Microsoft.
The internet search giant has come up with its Transparency Report that puts out the requests in a very organized manner. The report consists of all the victimized domains, copyright owners and the URLs to be taken down since July 2011. All that has been removed is supposedly pirated or copyrighted stuff majorly coming from entertainment or software big names.
The Transparency Reports that were released earlier only consisted of government pleas to take down the content. The obstacles in Google’s traffic sequence were also present in the report. The copyright and piracy problems are yet to be highlighted. The transparency reports, as the name suggests, really show it all. They tell which governments are blocking or censoring Google Services. Also, they reveal which governments are inquiring users about their details.
For instance from January till June of this year, the United Sates made 4,287 requests for user details. Attaining user details and privacy concerns are yet another highlighted area in technology news. On a larger scale, government agencies are rooting for control from internet companies in order to be able to access information. When looking at a smaller scale, Spyware Apps from companies like Mobistealth or Flexispy are becoming increasingly popular.
Coming back to the transparency report, the statistics show that Microsoft comes first in the spotlight. The giant has turned out to be the biggest complainer of copyright violation. It asked for a total of 2,544,209 URLS to be taken down. Right after Microsoft are NBCUniversal, BPI, RIAA and Elegant Angel pornographic film studio. All the appeals between July and December 2011 have been approved.
The senior copyright counsel, Fred Von Lohman, stated that the quantity of removal calls have been progressing at some rate. He said that it is normal for them to receive 250,000 requests per week. That is really shocking for them as before this was the total amount they had to deal with in all of 2009. As stated earlier, 1.2 million appeals were established after 1,000 copyright owners demanded to take down the search results.
Products apart from Google Search, like YouTube or Blogger, are not included in the stats. Google declared that it hopes to refresh the numbers everyday and insert a removal notice in the search results. Google will also distribute copies of the deletion pleas with Chilling Effects. Chilling Effects is basically a nonprofit company that is responsible for accumulating these kinds of alerts. Google also went on to state that the person responsible can propose a counter-notice if they think that the removal request was wrong.
Von Lohmann also stated that they are initiating the search since they take off results due to copyright removal request than any other reason available. The problem of copyright violation is a big one in the global world. Internet users and policy makers are looking at all the advantages and disadvantages of various ways to tackle this problem. He also hopes that the data Google provides would be useful as well.
He stated that tackling this problem is a major concern as they don’t want people visiting websites that are breaching copyright laws. Google wishes to be open about this removal so that the researches and users comprehend as to why some material is removed from the search results and the big reason behind it.
