The top 3 most popular social site after number 2 Twitter and number 1 Facebook is not Google+. It’s not even Tumblr. It’s Pinterest.

If you haven’t heard of Pinterest, that’s probably because it’s the latest one among social networking sites.

Yet this social networking site has become more popular than LinkedIn, Tumblr and Google+, tallying 104 million unique visitors last March. This is according to a report by Experian Marketing Services, a digital marketing business.

The results do not include traffic from mobile devices.

Pinterest is a social networking site that allows you to pin images into a virtual board. These boards divide into several categories, for example, favorite tourist spots, and the like. Wikipedia describes it as a social photo-sharing website.

Pinterest initially developed in 2009 and its beta release came in March 2010. Its motto is “to connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting.”

As it continues to pull in more users, some have used Pinterest for other purposes as well, such as saving images for ideas to how their new homes decorations should look like, saving images for planning a wedding, finding styles, saving inspirations and saving recipes.

So why is Pinterest so popular? Most of its users are female, and most of the time, they pin images that reflect what they aspire to do, or own, such as dresses, food and houses. A Pinterest says that it isn’t surprising most of the sites users are women, because women are good at escapist fantasies.
