Nokia Symbian OS Will Not Reach 2016, Says Report

Nokia apparently is hurrying up the demise of its Symbian operating system, putting an end to its relatively outdated mobile platform before 2016.

While the Symbian community is busy talking about the next updates, namely Symbian Carla and Symbian Donna, for current Nokia devices, the Finnish phone maker now looks intent in making one last Symbian device that will follow the footsteps of the popular N8.

The company already promised to support Symbian OS despite its decision to change the primary operating system to Microsoft’s Windows Phone during last year’s Mobile World Congress, revealing its aim to sell another 150 million Symbian devices before throwing the towel for the troubled OS.

When it comes to recent sales figures, however, Nokia’s good intentions did not prove enough to inspire a large following from Symbian loyalists, as the company admitted lackluster sales of its legacy platform.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop pointed fingers at the dynamic and progressively hard to predict market conditions, and at how customers preferred lower cost smartphones, saying, “We now believe that we will sell fewer Symbian devices than we anticipated.”

Last summer, Accenture struck a deal with Nokia to continue the development of the operating system by acquiring around 3000 Symbian developers.

The recent news, if true, will place Accenture in an awkward position, especially when its agreement with Nokia tethers them to develop for Symbian until 2016.

Are, another day, another Symbian/Nokia demise rumour.

    …and another that seems baseless…again!

Without the “source” being able to give any real indication of being correct, I’d take it’s predictions with a very big pinch of salt. Hell, not even Eldar Murtazin seems to have picked up on this latest (most likely crazy) rumour!
