Motorola Droid X releases a coveted Gingerbread update but bricks several devices.
While most Droid X owners spend time exploring their new Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, others are going through a nightmare right now.
The over-the-air (OTA) update apparently bricks some Droid X devices, and owners are complaining.
The affected Droid X owners say that after downloading and installing the update, their phone goes black, and refuses to boot up again.
Others report that even though they have a bricked phone, it boots up sometime later.
It is uncertain how many owners bricked their Motorola Droid X, but like any other update, there likely is a small percentage.
The update apparently also brings along a couple of issues that key Android updates typically take along with them.
Some owners experience battery life problems and issues trying to sync, but both of these are clearly insignificant when you cannot use your device.

No problems here.. Loving the gingerbread update!
You’re lucky. Others are unfortunate though.
Mine was one that got bricked. It would blackout and you couldn’t get it to come back up. If I took out the battery it would start up and work fine for a little bit. The thing that was weird was it was so random. One time it blacked out as soon as it got booted, another time it worked fine for about five hours.
Verizon was cool about it though, I got a replacement overnighted no questions asked.
That’s great news.
Pretty nice..just wish I knew everything that they changed
I bricked my phone due to the upgrade, couldn’t hard reset the phone for some reason, and was then told by the Verizon rep that since I had some scratches on my phone ( I didn’t put a case on it), that Motorola would not replace my phone.
Simply put, Motorola broke my phone, and is now making me pay for a new one because I didn’t see any reason to put a case on the phone. How is that fair?
Definitely not fair. Verizon should have offered more options than just a paid replacement, especially if you are still under contract/warranty.
I would hope you didn’t just take that and go on about your businss. Definitely need to push that on up the chain of command and do something about it. Just a few scratches would be fine, now if it has been dropped a lot and chunks are missing and things like that then your really going to have to push them hard and plead your case to get a replacement.
No real bricking problems here. Only a few problems with text messaging and a couple of glitches here and there.
