Mobile Shopping Trend During Thanksgiving And Black Friday Rises

The findings of a new study by mobile analytics provider Mobidia have confirmed a rise in shopping trends during the Black Friday weekend.

While other analytics firms already provided data on the subject, the mobile analytics firm released its own data results and insights, focusing on mobile shopping.

Black Friday is the largest shopping day of the year in the U.S., and Mobidia’s data analysis shows how people growingly use and lean on mobile apps to do their shopping spree.

The 2013 usage analysis of more than 25 selected shopping apps in the internet, retail, shopping aid, and deal categories compared trends between Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday and the rest of the year.

Here are the notable findings on November 28 to 29 compared to the rest of 2013:

 

1. The number of minutes spent on mobile shopping apps was higher than averages throughout 2013.

Use of mobile shopping apps on Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday grew 48 percent and 86 percent, respectively, compared to the average use in 2013.

 

2. Smartphone users preferred to use mobile apps rather than physical and desktop online shopping. But when compared to major mobile apps such as Facebook, mobile shopping apps made up a small part of mobile usage.

Mobile shopping minutes of Mobidia’s sample users made up 4.23 percent of minutes spent in Facebook in 2013. It rose to 7.87 percent on Black Friday.

3. Strong year-over-year growth among top mobile shopping apps between last year’s and this year’s Black Fridays.

Top mobile shopping apps eBay and Amazon had 9 percent and 6 percent YoY growth, while Groupon and Dealnews had 70 percent and 32 percent YoY growth.

Mobidia marketing VP Chris Hill said U.S. smartphone users in the study’s sample of millions of users grew their use of mobile shopping apps over the first big holiday shopping weekend. The findings show a rise in users and unique views of mobile shopping apps and mobile shopping minutes.

“It looks like consumers are making smartphones a critical component to their shopping experiences,” he added.

Mobidia said that it studied data gathered throughout 2013, specifically on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, from millions of its smartphone users across the world. It added that data collection was strictly optional and anonymous from millions of users who downloaded Mobidia’s app, My Data Manager.
