Microsoft has revealed that the company has had a huge success with the Xbox 360 gaming console and the Kinext motion sensor selling over 67 million and 19 million units of the devices respectively.
In a post on the Official Microsoft Blog, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Division Chief Marketing Officer Yusuf Mehdi said that the Xbox 360, by selling more than 67 million units, has generated over $56 billion at retail for Microsoft.
Xbox 360 is also said to have a 47 percent share of the whole current-generation gaming console market in the U.S.
Mehdi also stressed that they have sold over 19 million Kinect sensors and that they have over 40 million members in the Xbox LIVE community. These users are spending an average of 84 hours on the Xbox per month, Mehdi said.
The Microsoft Kinect motion-sensing controller has been very successful, even getting last year the Guinness World Record for being the fastest-selling consumer electronic device of all time.
According to Guinness then, during the first 60 days that the Kinect was on sale, Microsoft sold 8 million units of it. That translates to an average of 133,333 units of the Kinect sold each day.
The Xbox 360 is scheduled to be replaced by the Xbox 720 – a nickname given to Microsoft’s next-generation console – which is said to be possibly already in production.
