Streaming technology is considered as the future. With that in mind, various gaming companies are embracing it. And one of them is Microsoft.

Recently, Microsoft announced its Project xCloud. It is a streaming video game service that intends to offer console games to desktop, smartphones, and consoles. It will start to introduce public trials next year.

In this project, gamers could connect their Xbox One controller to certain devices. Your smartphones, for example, could be connected through Bluetooth. Then, a small connector is attached to the controller to the phone. You can also use touch controls if Xbox One controller is not available.

According to Microsoft:

“Today, the games you play are very much dictated by the device you are using. Project xCloud’s state-of-the-art global game-streaming technology will offer you the freedom to play on the device you want without being locked to a particular device, empowering YOU, the gamers, to be at the center of your gaming experience.”

This project enables people to play any games they want, wherever they are and any time they wish using any platform.

In that case, this gaming streaming service will function like Spotify or Netflix but for games. It lets you play, stream to your phone while you are on the go. Then, you can play the game on your desktop when you get back home. For example, you can connect your smartphone to an Xbox controller and play the game as normal through the small display of your phone. Then, it can be streamed over the Internet.

It is currently being tested. The public can see and participate in it in 2019. The specific date is not disclosed though.

Microsoft built it for the developers of the thousands of games on Xbox One. Apart from allowing players to play games on the move, it also enables developers to show their games to millions of new individuals.

In recent months, streaming games are becoming popular. It is not surprising considering the fact that the Internet connections allow individuals to play games without the use of their hardware. Google announced that it could stream the new Assassin’s Creed game using Chrome.

What makes it challenging is that games can be difficult to stream. The reason for this is that they involve inputs from a user. Furthermore, streaming must guarantee that the games are being sent live and in high-quality.

PlayStation Now offered a streaming games service. However, it started offering an option to download games.

This streaming service utilizes Azure as its backbone in setting up a datacenter. It has customized hardware that utilizes multiple Xbox One consoles. Currently, Azure has various data centers in 140 countries. That said, Microsoft is confident that it has the ability to roll out this service successfully.

Furthermore, it is discovering new ways to fight against latency. The main objective here is to allow streaming even on 4G networks. Microsoft also wants developers to showcase their games through this project without the need to provide additional work.
