Micron Technology Inc Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Steve Appleton died on Friday after a small plane the executive was flying crashed at the Boise Airport in Idaho.
The 51-year-old CEO was known to channel his vigor for life through extreme hobbies like stunt flying and off-road racing.
He died while piloting an experimental plane, a single-engined unit from Lancair, a company which sells kits to build planes.
According to reports, Boise police spokesperson Lynn Hightower has said to members of the press that Appleton radioed after he was at about 200 feet off the ground that the small Lancair had a problem and that he needed to turn around and land again.
Before his deadly plane crash, Appleton has survived two plane crashes including one in 2004 in which he survived but sustained very serious injuries.
Meanwhile, Micron’s board said in a statement that “Steve’s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large.”
Micron is a U.S.-based maker of chips for consumer electronics products like mobile devices, cameras and personal computers.
Micron has said that President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Duncan will take CEO duties at the company until a successor to Appleton is selected.
