A court in New Zealand granted Kim Dotcom, the founder of controversial online repository Megaupload, access to over NZ$ 6 million (US$4.84 million) on Wednesday to pay legal costs and living expenses.
Reuters reports that the court will also allow Dotcom to acquire funds from the sale of his luxury cars.
He owns a fleet of 15 cars: a 1959 pink Cadillac, a 2008 Rolls Royce Coupe, a modified Mercedes E500, and 12 others.
The funds will be a loan insured against a NZ$ 10 million government bond posted by Dotcom to earn permanent residency in New Zealand.
“The plan of the US government and New Zealand prosecutors to keep us locked up and from access to a proper legal defense has failed,” Dotcom, 38, a German also known as Kim Schmitz, said in an email to Reuters.
“We have a competent legal team that can now operate at full capacity to defend us.”
Dotcom currently fights against extradition to the US to face charges of copyright infringement, money laundering and racketeering.
He continues to plead not guilty and asserts the legality of Megaupload, which he claims abided by copyright laws.
In January this year, government authorities raided Dotcom’s house, impounded his vehicles, and arrested him on charges of fraud and online piracy.
