A group of Medium members can now earn some money just by collecting claps
Medium is a great place to read interesting articles. And the platform is ready for a new era. Medium very recently launched a new feature for their updated Partner Program. With this new feature a bunch of writers will have a new way to write their stories and get paid. And here is how.
According to a blog post from Medium:
“We strongly believe that quality content needs to be paid for by consumers — not advertisers — so creators can do their best work, and to align the incentives of everyone involved. So, since March, we’ve been experimenting with our subscription paywall and putting more and more great stories behind it. But that’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the thousands of fantastic stories published on Medium every day. And, though Medium is an open publishing platform, we haven’t enabled a way for most of our writers to participate in the economics.”
So, they are sending invitations to a small group of writers and publications to join their program. Once the writers join they will have the option to publish their story to Medium members only and get paid based on engagement. Of course the content will be available through the search option, the writer’s followers, the home page and the app.
The writer will get paid each month based on the engagement on the stories from members. Of course being a member means you have to pay the $5 fee every month. Once members read the story and like it, they can Clap it! But, why claps?
“Essentially, we look at the engagement of each individual member (claps being the primary signal) and allocate their monthly subscription fee based on that engagement. This is one of the reasons we love Claps — it helps us measure the depth of appreciation that a member has for each individual post.”
Now, if you like the platform but you don’t want to become a professional writer and earn some money it’s okay. You can continue using the platform from free like you used to. You can create an account, write and share your work, without any obligation.
Keep in mind that Medium has changed their paywall form from no access” to a “metered” one. This means that non-members will have limited access to locked stories each month.
If you are looking for a new place to publish and maybe earn some money then you should become a member of Medium. Then you could join the Partner Program waitlist. While you wait for a reply you should definitely check out the FAQ page to learn more about the program. And if you have questions you can send an email at email@example.com.
Maybe all of the above sound very promising but there is a big question that seeks for an answer. How much will writers get paid?
