We’ve seen a lot of novel approaches to smartphone technology but the Kyocera Urbano Progresso is still very memorable to us. This is because the smartphone from the Japanese handsets manufacturer actually does not have a traditional speaker like other smartphones have.
What it has is a new technology being dubbed Smart Sonic Receiver which makes the smartphone’s whole screen its speaker when making calls.
Those who may want to try this technology first by buying the phone should be in Japan this Thursday, May 31 as the country’s AU KDDI mobile carrier will get the Kyocera Urbano Progresso by that time.
This new smartphone boasts of Smart Sonic Receiver which transmits vibrations from the screen up to the ear when held to the face.
According to Kyocera, the phone is actually better than conventional phones in terms of clear conversations in noisy areas. This new technology also benefits our hearing impaired brothers and sisters, Kyocera said in a previous release.
Using a piezo-electric actuator motor to vibrate the screen, Kyocera Urbano Progresso has its whole screen as its speaker. Kyocera said that “Smart Sonic Receiver is a new function which uses a piezo-electric actuator to create vibrations along a wide area of the display screen which in turn transmits clear voice quality to the user. This is the first smartphone in the world to be equipped with this function.”
Furthermore, the company explained: “As the vibrations cover a wide area of the screen, the user is able to hear clear voice quality regardless of where their ear is placed. Furthermore, by pressing the whole screen against your ear to create a cover, it is easier to hear in crowded and noisy environments.”
The new smartphone also packs a serious set of hardware as it aims to compete within the cutthroat smartphones industry in Japan. Proving that it isn’t going to be left behind specs-wise aside from its own unique Smart Sonic Receiver, the new phone includes this set of specifications.
The Kyocera Urbano Progresso will be packing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when it’s released. It will have a dual-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon S2 processor and 1GB RAM as its brain.
