The Apple iPad still remains king of the hill in tablet market share as new data suggests that the Apple tablet still reigns in the industry.
The development comes even though the iPad experienced a decline in market share during the third quarter of the year, data from ABI Research suggests.
According to ABI Research, the iPad “continued to best all others with 55% unit shipment share in the period.”
The market intelligence firm’s report reveals the iPad has led the way for 10 consecutive quarters.
That doesn’t mean, however, that Apple can relax. Android is gaining, the data from the firm reveals, and iPad market share was down 14 percent in the just-ended quarter.
“With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year,” said senior practice director Jeff Orr in a statement.
“As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers – new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content,” Orr said.
Android is gaining on the iPad as the Google-backed mobile operating system raked in over 44 percent market share last quarter, the research firm notes.
