Instagram Tests Feature That Hides Hashtags from Posts

It is true that there is no restriction on the number of hashtags you can use. However, over-hashtagging can be bad. It could be the reason Instagram is testing a feature that might stop the hashtag madness.

Most Instagram users fill their captions with #hashtags making it difficult to read the description. But their goal is to score more views or followers.

Instagram continues to improve its services. It can do so with the help of Facebook’s deep pockets. That said, Instagram could provide its application full of fresh features.

Unfortunately, Instagram did not comment on whether or not the hashtag selector will be released or it is still testing it. There is also a chance that the company will just scrap it.

However, Jane Manchun Wong managed to unveil the prototype through the social media’s Android app’s code. In the code, it shows an Add Hashtag option under the caption composer.

Hiding hashtags from captions could make posts less distracting. Although it could assist the app in fine-tuning its algorithm, the most important benefit of this future feature is to make the app less annoying. In this way, you will no longer be seeing the many hashtags that your friend slaps on his/her every post.

Why Use Hashtags?

The pound sign or number sign is now recognized to have a greater purpose. The hashtag has been around since 2007. It is used to categorize your post. It started on Twitter. Soon, Google+, Facebook and Instagram have caught on with little regulation on usage.

Hashtag creates a hyperlink for the word that you used. You can apply it to any word or group of words. At first, it was cool. It used to be a handy tool to collect photos, join conversations and marketing.

Unfortunately, some people are committing an over-hashtagging crime.

What is Over-Hashtagging?

It simply means that you are using many hashtags in one post. The ideal way is to add up to three short hashtags or one hashtag if it is long.

Unfortunately, overdoing it is bad as it distracts from the key message of your post. Furthermore, it will make your post spammy, even if it is not. Then, the post will look sloppy. It also makes you appear like an amateur poster. People will think that you do not comprehend the concept of hashtagging.

When your follower sees that your post has too many hashtags, they immediately lose interest. People do not want to find words with number signs. Some of them do not even form a logical sentence. That said, make sure to use hash tagging correctly.

If you need to add hashtags, make sure to get creative. Use them as a statement, rather than open-ended questions. Utilize unique hashtags that would represent your brand or company. In this way, it will be easier for you to track relevant posts. Don’t use generic hashtags if your goal is brand awareness.

Although hashtags are useful, too much of them is not a good thing. When you do use a hashtag, ensure that it is serving an actual purpose.
