Instagram Introduces Private Collections

Instagram recently added a feature taken from another service. This time, it’s not from Snapchat but Pinterest.

The latest feature is called Collections. And it allows users to create groups of their photos the same way you create boards on Pinterest.

When you save a post, you can set up and label a new collection. In this way, you’ll have an organized digital gallery containing all your favorite photos.

Even though this latest feature is similar to Pinterest’s playbook, there’s a big difference. That is, the collections will only be visible to the user.

How to use it?

“Tap and hold the bookmark icon underneath any post to save it directly to a collection. You can create and name a new collection when you save a post, or you can add it to one you’ve already created. You can also create a collection out of your existing saved posts. Tap the plus icon in the top right corner, give your collection a name and select the saved posts you’d like to add.” – Instagram

Bookmarking Tool

Last year, the company introduced the bookmarking tool that aimed to take advantage of users’ behavior when using the app. That is, they save photos that others had posted.

Most Instagram users regularly keep posts so they can look back later on. It doesn’t matter what posts they are. They could be a great quote or a funny photo, a vacation inspiration or an outfit that they may want to shop online.

With this tool, users can save posts to their profile and get back to them later. That said, there’s no need for them to download the photos to their phone’s gallery.

Instagram stated that:

“Since we introduced the ability to save posts last December, 46 percent of Instagrammers have saved at least one post. Whether you want to plan your next day trip, revisit your favorite artists’ illustrations or always have some animal videos on hand, collections can help you keep track of the posts you want to remember.”

Now, with the introduction of Instagram Collections, the company wants to make bookmarking more powerful. If you’ve already saved photos, you could now go back and make a collection of your saved photos.

As mentioned earlier, your saved posts are only visible to you. Pinterest, on the other hand, allows users to create a board, share it and organized boards with others.

The introduction of this new feature came shortly after Google introduced its “style ideas” in Image Search. It goes along with an expanded collection of similar items when you search for apparel and accessories.

Other Updates

In addition to Instagram Collections, the app also updated its Stories feature to include several tools. Among them are the geostickers in four cities, such as London, Tokyo, Chicago, and Madrid. It also includes a hands-free timer.

Last month, it introduced custom geostickers to Jakarta, Sao Paulo, and New York. Starting today, users from Madrid, Chicago, London, and Tokyo can access these stickers with a new twist. Each label is designed by local community members from the said cities.
