Instagram has launched one of the biggest changes yet to its feed. The Facebook subsidiary will start showing you recommended posts. What this means is that the ephemeral sharing app will start suggesting posts to you based on those that have been previously liked by other accounts you follow.
The new feature, which is labeled to distinguish it from your home feed, will contain three to five suggested posts, TechCrunch reports.
On Instagram’s help page, the company explained how the new Suggested posts feature works:
“When scrolling through Feed, you may see posts that are Recommended for You. These posts are suggested based on posts liked by accounts you follow. You can choose to temporarily hide Recommended for You posts.”
It’s a big change like I already said earlier, and one that will encourage you to follow other accounts apart from the ones you are already following—however, these suggested posts will run alongside ads.
Suggested posts is currently being rolled out to both iOS and Android users, but no timeline on when the feature will be finally rolled out to all. However, we expect that the feature will eventually be made available to all users in the next couple of days or maybe weeks.
Similar to the Recommended posts feature is one that allows you to follow hashtags of popular posts. That feature was rolled out a fortnight ago by Instagram, and will further boost the platform’s growing number of users.
Instagram started testing the feature last month when only a handful of people were able to access it. The feature has now been rolled out to a global audience.
Here’s how to follow a hashtag: search a topic that interests you or tap on a hashtag from any post. You will see different hashtags displayed in your search result along with related accounts. When you do find one that interests you, open the hashtag page and tap on the follow button—and that’s it! You will start seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and some of the latest stories in your stories bar—and of course, you can always unfollow a hashtag at any time.
In case you need a helping hand on how to find hashtags to follow, simply check out the hashtags being followed by other people in their profiles. Your privacy has also been taken into account by Instagram. The company says the hashtags you follow will only be visible to your followers; but you will first have to set your account to private.
The new tool will be very helpful to new users, especially when it comes to finding new accounts to follow. The Instagram user-base is about to experience a massive rise considering how easy it’s now going to be for new users to connect to other users.
