Hybrid malware is the new type of cyber threat, announces BitDefender. This type of malware results from the infection with viruses of the worms on the computers affected. The study conducted by BitDefender reveals the existence of more than 40,000 of such hybrids in a sample of ten million infected files. That means no less than 0.4% of cyber attacks detected and verified by experts.
Hybrid malware is even more dangerous if it has a higher spreading power, attacking systems chaotically. The result is endangering the bank accounts of the users, but also the information on the infected devices. According to BitDefender specialists, even the creators of these new threats could not predict the way hybrid malware will act.
BitDefender decided to investigate these malicious hybrids after discovering a worm called “Rimecud”, which was infected by the Virtob virus, whose characteristic is to infect files.
“If such a hybrid reaches the user’s device, it will face serious financial problems, identity theft or spam,” said Loredana Botezatu, E-Threats Analyst at BitDefender, the initiator of the research on the new hybrid malware.
