HTC Corp is looking to finalize its acquisition of S3 Graphics, the company has confirmed.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Taiwanese smartphone and tablet maker still wants to buy S3 Graphics as it looks to bolster its patent holdings.

The publication says that HTC has “an eye on [S3 Graphics’] strong patent portfolio.

The confirmation from HTC comes from HTC General Cousel Grace Lei who said that the preliminary ruling of the U.S. International Trade Commission back in 2011 that Apple has violated S3 Graphics technology has made the Taiwanese tech company sure that it will buy the graphics chipset maker.

“We think S3′s patent portfolio is valid and strong, and we have decided to complete the purchase of S3 after cautious assessment,” the lawyer is quoted as saying in an HTC meeting of shareholders.

Currently, technology companies like Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have licenses to some of the 270 patents that S3 Graphics holds, the HTC official said.
