When you think of your personal brand you probably think of your business cards and what kind of suit you wear. Chances are the last thing you are thinking of is whether your shaving routine is going to leave razor burn or whether you are moisturizing properly. In this day and age, however, how you look tells the world a whole lot about you. And if you are showing up to work with a five o’clock shadow and razor burn you are probably telling the world you don’t particularly care how you look.

How you look is probably more important than it should be, but you have to realize that people make snap judgements about you based on your personal appearance. Once you have those judgements levied against you it’s really difficult to convince people they aren’t true. Unconscious bias is a lot stronger than you might think it is.

So how do you put your best face forward and allow people to see the real you on the first try? Start with you facial hair. Beards are very popular right now, but only if they are well kept and clean. More than 90% of men use shaving products, but it’s important to use products that are meant for your skin type. Men’s skin is 25% thicker and twice as sweaty as women’s’ skin, so using your wife’s or your girlfriend’s skincare products just isn’t going to cut it.

Many men these days are also concerned about their skin looking old or at least looking older than it needs to. Sunscreen is your secret weapon there. Use sunscreen everyday that is at least SPF 30, and go higher if you plan to be outdoors. Using a moisturizer that is right for your skin type is also critical, and it’s always nice to get that moisturizer and sunscreen combo to save yourself a little time in the morning. Other than that, your daily skincare routine depends on things like your skin type, whether you have facial hair, and whether you are prone to acne breakouts.

Putting your best face forward is the first step in creating an authentic personal brand, and your personal brand says more about who you are as a person than you might think. Looking your best can make you seem more confident, more competent, and more fun to be around. Learn more about proper skincare for men from this infographic.
