Government computers again attacked by virus, Iranian official

iran cyber virus stars 300x180 Government computers again attacked by virus, Iranian officialComputer systems of Iranian government have once again been attacked by cyber worm, said an official from country’s Ministry of Civil Defense Gholam Reza Jalali, reports CNN.

The report did not specify whether the worm, given the name Stars, has attacked the computers of nuclear power plants, as was in the case not long ago when highly specialized Stuxnet worm hit the headlines that was targeted towards infiltrating the centrifuge machines.

Jalali in an interview to the semi-official news agency Mehr confirmed that the new virus called Stars is currently being investigated by experts.

According to Jalali, they have already understood the specific characteristics of the worm: “It is compatible with the (targeted) system,” and “inflicts minor damage in the initial stage and might be mistaken for executive files of governmental organizations,” Herald quoted him saying.

It is not clear what exactly the objective of Stars virus is.

It must be recalled that in September 2010 a computer virus Stuxnet brought down several centrifuges at the Uranium enrichment facility in Natanz. After this incident, the experts warned about the start of “cyberwar.”

Meanwhile, as reported by media, Iranian nuclear computer systems were once again attacked by Stuxnet on February 1. Iran had been planning to launch Bushehr nuclear power plant at full capacity on January 25, but Russians had warned Iran about the resumption of cyber attacks and expressed concern that the station could explode if it was launched.

The highly specialized aggressive computer virus Stuxnet represents a new generation of software programs that can fail entire production lines.

It must be added that Iran accuses U.S. and Israel behind cyber attacks on their Nuclear Research computer systems, which are believed to have led to delay in country’s nuclear weapons program.
