Running low on data? No worries—Google has a new app called YouTube Go. The new app is designed for users living in regions where broadband connectivity is limited—and that includes India.
Not a coincidence that Google has opted to begin the test of the new app with users in India where broadband connection is very limited. YouTube Go, according to Google’s announcement, is aimed at helping you share videos without burning your data. “Built [YouTube Go] for the next generation of users to enjoy the power of YouTube. Maximize your fun without burning up your data.”
Of course, the app is for everyone, but it goes without a say that there are some regions where bandwidth consumption is always an issue. To users in those places, the app looks like a perfect way to watch and share videos from YouTube without burning their data. It also means they are no longer worried about sharing video because of low data.
The app is still being tested and has not been rolled out on a larger scale. However, you can sign up (I just did) to be among first set of people to find out when it is finally rolled out to a global audience.
“YouTube Go is a brand new app to help the next generation of users share and enjoy videos,” YouTube product management VP Johanna Wright says in a statement, per The Verge. “YouTube Go was designed and built from the ground up with insights from India, in order to bring the power of video to mobile users in a way that is more conscious of their data and connectivity, while still being locally relevant and social.”
So what can YouTube Go do for you or what can you do with the app?
Of course, the major thing it can do for you is help you save data and access YouTube in any area where bandwidth connection is limited. However, there are other things the app can do for you or shall I say what you can do with it:
Find and watch videos online: You can find or search for your favorite videos on YouTube and watch them using the app. YouTube Go also helps you to discover new videos that you can watch or share with your friends.
Control your data: With the app, you can preview and download any video of your choice. You can also control your video MB sizes, which helps you to control your data consumption. I have a feeling that the lower the MB size, the lower the video quality you can watch with the app.
Save and watch video: Even when you have a slow connection, YouTube Go can still be used to download or watch videos without buffering—this saves a lot of time and MB too.
Share videos offline: You can share videos with your friends even while you are offline. This is perfect for those times when you don’t have data but want to share a lovely video with someone.
