It is pound for a pound as Google is all set to take on WhatsApp and Paytm by adding a messaging feature to Google Tez. Just in case you have never heard of Google Tez, it is a mobile payment app launched late last year specifically for the Indian market.
Only a few months after it was launched, the app clocked 12 million users—signifying its popularity within a short time. Not to be undone by its two biggest rivals in the market—WhatsApp and Paytm, Google has added a messaging feature to Tez.
The chat feature, according to the Economic Times, is gradually being rolled out to users in India. The idea, according to Google, is to make it easy for users to track their transactions anytime they send or receive money from their contacts.
“We’ve added a feature to Tez that allows you to send simple messages back and forth to your contacts about the payments you make,” a Google spokesperson said per the Economic Times.
By adding a chat feature, Google wants to create a platform where every user can get virtually everything done within the app without exiting it. If all goes according to plan, it could indeed pay off in the end, but Google has the small matters of WhatsApp and Paytm to deal with.
Google Tez uses UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and is designed to work with all major banks, including Axis, HDFC Bank, ICICI and State Bank of India. Since it uses UPI, the new app will allow you to transfer money to other users at no cost. You will be able to enjoy a simplified checkout system while using Tez. Credit card support and third-party wallets have also been added to enable the new platform compete with popular wallets like Paytm and Mobikwik.
Only last month, Google Tez added the ability to pay bills within the app. You can pay your electricity bills, broadband bills, and many others. You will also be able to retrieve your billing history and pay off your outstanding bills with just a few taps.
More than 80 organizations have signed on to be a part of Google Tez, including national and state electric, gas and water, and TV/internet services.
Simply tap on “New Payment” and then “Pay your bills.” Once done, a list of supported billers on Tez across locations will be presented to you or, if you like, you can manually search for them by name. Once the biller of your choice has been located, simply enter the number associated with your bank account to link to Tez, and don’t forget to give it a name that you can easily remember each time you want to pay your bill.
For recurring utility bills, Google Tez payments will fetch any new bill and send you a timely notification when it arrives. You can easily check if you have paid a bill by tapping on the biller’s name on your Tez home screen. This will enable you to view previous payments grouped by biller, and you will be able to manage bills from multiple accounts.
